7 Tips for Buying the Right Signal Converter?
Define Accuracy, Resolution, Isolation, and Response-Time Requirements
A signal converter is only as useful as its measurement requirements. Start with accuracy, not marketing claims. A 0.1% accuracy specification may still produce unacceptable errors across a wide temperature range. Check whether the figure includes linearity, hysteresis, drift, and calibration uncertainty. NIST Technical Note 1297 recommends reporting expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of k=2, representing approximately 95% confidence. Ask for test conditions and calibration evidence.
Resolution is different from accuracy. A converter may display tiny changes while measuring them poorly. Match resolution to the smallest meaningful process change. For a 0–10 V input, 12-bit conversion provides about 2.44 mV per step, before noise and other errors. More bits are not automatically better. Noise can make extra digits meaningless.
Isolation deserves equal attention. Verify working voltage, test voltage, insulation type, and isolation capacitance. IEC 61298-2 outlines performance tests for industrial-process measurement devices, including response behavior. Compare its response time with your control-loop needs. A slow converter can create overshoot, even when its accuracy looks excellent. I have seen specifications judged in isolation, literally. That approach is risky. Real installations add cable capacitance, grounding differences, temperature variation, and electromagnetic noise. Leave practical margin, then test the complete signal chain under operating conditions.
